In 1974, several prominent business people in Lee County and local Southwest Florida PGA professionals had a vision to create a junior golf program exclusively dedicated to Southwest Florida youth. This dream became a reality with the founding of Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association. In the summer of 2014, we are extremely proud announce that we will be celebrating our 40th anniversary serving junior golfers in Southwest Florida. Our association is a recognized 501 C 3 corporation with the IRS and is directed by local volunteers and SW Florida PGA Professionals.
Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association “SWFJGA” reaches several hundred kids in two specific age ranges 7-12 and 13-18 every summer from June through August. SWFJGA provides both a developmental – non intimating, but competitive 9 hole group which is designed to instruct and introduce the game, plus a very competitive 18 hole tournament format designed for the more accomplished junior players that is conducted under the USGA Rules of Golf.
Over our 40 years of existence, our junior golf program has produced multiple PGA and LPGA touring professionals, local PGA and LPGA club professionals, as well as many local business leaders. Our game of golf and SWFJGA promotes personal character growth, responsibility, and social skills that create lifelong friendships and achievement.
The continued growth of golf is essential through today’s junior golfers in order to develop our next generation of players in the next 10 to 20 years. These kids will be your next club members, business owners, teachers, and neighbors. Therefore, our commitment as a junior golf program is to continue make this game fun, affordable, and available to all kids.
In addition to conducting 9 junior tournaments during the summer season, including the prestigious annual Henke Berg Junior Masters at Cypress Lake Country Club, our organization has contributed over $225,000.00 in college scholarships to qualified high school seniors and enrolled college students. In 2014, Southwest Florida Junior Golf Association will be creating two very rewarding namesake scholarship awards for the most outstanding female – Patty Berg scholarship and the most outstanding male – Nolan Henke scholarship.
